Definition: OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)
OCD is an anxiety disorder characterised by obsessive, anxious thoughts and compulsive behaviours that are repeated in a ritualistic fashion.
Examples of common obsessions of people with OCD include:
* Fear of contamination often leading to obsessive washing
* Imagining losing control or agressive urges
* A need to tell, ask or confess
* Obsession with symmetry or having things 'just so' - for example household
objects in a certain order, putting pictures straight,
etc.
* Pathological doubt, leading to a need to repeatedly check, for example
that a door is locked, a tap is turned off.
A person with OCD will often imagine that something awful will happen
if the ritual behaviour is not completed.
The symptoms of OCD frequently cause distress, take up a lot of time,
or significantly interfere with the person's work, social life, or relationships.
