Definition: REM (Rapid Eye Movement)

Rapid eye movement refers to the involuntary twitching of eyes observed in certain periods of sleep. During sleep people will normally have four to six periods of REM, lasting from 10 to 50 minutes. The phases of REM sleep correspond with the ultradian rhythms during the day.

During the REM phase of sleep the brain is extremely active, usually associated with dreaming, although dreaming also occurs outside of the REM periods. REM phases of sleep appear to assist instinctive and cognitive learning, and also to discharge still unresolved emotions aroused during the day.

REM does not only occur during sleep, but is also observed in hypnosis.
