Definition: Serotonin/Seratonin

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter, that is to say it is a chemical 'messenger' that allows communication between nerve cells.

Serotonin, along with other neurotransmitters, dopamine and noradrenaline (norepinephrine), play a role in regulating mood.

Low levels of serotonin are associated with depression, it was commonly thought that low serotonin levels were a cause of depression, but more recent research shows that low levels of serotonin are the result of depression.

Many modern anti-depressants of the SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) family act to make more serotonin available to the nerve cells.

During dream phases of sleep the production of serotonin is reduced. Serotonin production is usually greatest during periods of vigorous exercise.
