Definition: SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor)

SSRIs are a type of anti-depressant that make more serotonin useable by slowing down its removal, without actually generating more serotonin. Examples of SSRIs include Prozac, Celexa (Citalopram), Paxil and Zoloft.

SSRIs appear to be no more effective than other types of anti-depresants, but tend to have fewer, or less severe side effects.

When ceasing to take SSRIs it is important to do so under medical supervision, so that the medication is gradually decreased, as sudden withdrawal can have unpleasant effects.
