Definition: Ultradian Rhythm

In general terms, ultradian rhythm means a cycle or pattern that cycles or repeats in less than a day.

In the psychological context it refers to the repeated switching of brain hemispheric dominance, from left brain to right brain, occuring about every 90 minutes, both during waking hours and sleep.

The left hemisphere is more specialised for linear, logical thought and communication, and the right is more active when we are relaxed, dreaming and in hypnosis.

The switchover to right brain dominance, which lasts about 20 minutes, is the body and mind's natural time for recuperation, boosting the immune system and improving clarity of thought. During times of right hemisphere dominance people commonly report that they feel more sleepy, or dreamy, or just notice slowing down.

Work by Ernest Rossi and other researchers has shown that taking a 20 minute break at this time can convert stress into what he called the Ultradian Healing Response, which can prevent accidents through human error, improve creativity and performance and can relieve depression, stress and anxiety.
