The Radio 4 website has a page for audience comments, making it easy to leave comments. Some people have already referred to Joseph Griffin's work on dreams, and their disappointment that it was omitted from the programme!

I have just been in touch with the Human Givens Institute about this as they have asserted in the past that the main reason anti-depressants work is that they suppress REM sleep.

My feeling is that it's a confusion brought about by the fact that the chap who made the comment did not know that depressed people dream more anyway.

There are a few letters on their way to Radio 4 about it. If anyone here cares to bring it up with them it would be much appreciated.

Will keep you posted.
I've just listened again to that part of the programme that discusses the effect of anti-depresants on dreaming - it's about 2mins from the end.

Prof Ramachandran says that there is something that intrigues him - that most anti-depressants eliminate or reduce REM, and presumably reduce dreams.

One of the other contributors responds 'no they increase dreams' and suggests that this is evidence of the 'dissociation' of REM sleep from dreams.

Melvyn Bragg asks 'so anti-depressants increase dreams?' this and the contributor again confirms that they increase dreams.
Now that's odd, I am sure it is the other way round. I think Kathleen may well be right. We know that depressed people dream more - a lot more, and even when their dreaming is suppressed by anti-depressants (the main reason they work when they work) they still dream more than the average.
You can hear the programme at In Our Time.

I was interested to learn that dreams happen outside Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, people who have no REM sleep still dream, and that people who take anti-depressants dream more.
