Should I, or shouldn't I ?  Reply with quote

Hi Everyone.

I'm havin' a problem. I wanted to learn how to dance (I mean really dance, like latin or standard), for a while now. I haven't really got the money, no either the courageous.

You see. My confidence (or is it self esteem? - maybe both) Is really low, and I hate my body. So I'm kinda afraid to sign up for dance. I'm really afraid of what people think about my body. I see it in this way: Why would anyone think my body is nice, or just ok, when I don't?

-My question for you guys is: Do you think it would be a good idea to sign me up for dance? And do you think it might even help with my confidence?

I'm havin' a great chance. Michael Olesen (one of Denmarks best dancers - if not the best) would be my instructor/teacher.

-Please reply som answers, with honesty..

Love Melanie.

No, don't dance, leave it alone!

Happy now? Very Happy

Of course you should dance, you should follow your desires. Always try something if you are interested in it.

Don't bother what they will say about you. Just dance, it makes you feel good when you dance, don't let them control your happiness, you can always do it. Live free, live life you want to be.

A Good Half Of A Plan  Reply with quote

"Why would anyone think my body is nice, or just ok, when I don't?"
ANSWER:Because people who have low self-esteem have a distorted view of themselves, that's why.

What does your body appearance have to do with dancing anyway? It has to do with skill and with dancing instruction you will develop that.Any accomplishment helps to improve self-esteem,most especially if it is a publicly visible accomplishment such as dancing.SO YES! A really terrific idea!!

My only concern is your choice of an instructor. The most accomplished in any field tend to be poor teachers because of ego, impatience and even worse,a commitment to perfectionism which makes them excessively demanding and over-powering which can, and in your case almost certainly will ,lead to discouragement. It's far better to request a new and inexperienced teacher who will go slow, easy and most importantly, forgiving with you. Very Happy

Thanks ...  Reply with quote

Dr Dean: My body appearence have to do with dancing, that when people just look at me -just quick- , I always think it have somthing to do with my body -often that they think I'm fat.

Well yea I know it's like that with many (or most) prof. dancers. But Michael is a educated dance-instructor. And he's doing it for living.
Ehm, I have actually seen him teach, and been in a Zumba 'class' where he was instructor. And he's not impatience nor have a ego to project. He is really 'down to earth' and care about he's class.
-That's actually why I want him as my instructor and not one of the others. The others seems more like impatience ;D

But thanks all, and I think I'll give it a try :)[/b]

Melanie, the best thing you can do is to sign up for dance if that is what you want to do. It does not matter what others think and I guarantee nobody will be thinking what you are. What matters is how it makes you feel.

I would suggest that you start doing mirror exercises each day. Look at yourself in the mirror and identify what you like about yourself. Also, tell yoursrlf positive things in the mirror.

It will never be as bad as you think it will be. You will be so happy and your confidence will grow if you sign up. You have nothing to lose and only to gain! Go For it! Enjoy!
