Strange addiction  Reply with quote

Ok, this is a really strange addiction, and I'm sure you'll laugh, but even if you think you can't help me, I would like to know your opinion, cause I've been doing this for the last 7 years..
I've never discussed this with nowone. Ok, this started when I was 13, I used to listen to music and do a 'sort' of dance.. Ok, it wasn't/isn't a dance, it's more like running between two walls of my bedroom, I put the music out loud and start running always on two directions, and the adrenaline and the lyrics made and still make me dream. I'm 20 now and still doing it, I love the adrenaline. Some of you may think it isn't so bad, but the thing is, even when I have exams I'm still doing it, my body asks for it, and I spend an average of 3/4 hours a day on this.
Good or bad I would like to know your opinions.

I'm not sure that it's adrenaline but if you say so, ok Smile I also wouldn't classify it as an addiction. If you knocked off a store for a cd player, then maybe I'd say it's an addiction. Or if you skipped food for days, spent all your $$ on cd's etc. You get the idea? addiction is loss of control and gripping dependence. call it whatever you want though, I'm just being picky.

I think it's fine. Lots of people exercise while listening to music. Many primal societies dance to music and go into altered states. Or even moder religions do that too. This doesn't interfere with other aspects of life, right? If not I'd consider it beneficial. For one thing you have a way to relax and release and exercise. heck now I want to try it Laughing

I'd say if it feels good and doesn't hurt you or anyone else, then do it. Different strokes for different folks.

However, 3-4 hours sounds a bit excessive. Has it become a nervous habit, a way of procrastinating, putting off the ineviable? If you feel that you need to do it just to get through the day, then it probably is an issue and, while not necessarily an addiction, it's still a way of forcing your feelings down and avoiding dealing with some deeper issues in your psyche.

It sounds like one of those quirky things that's fine in small doses, but could be quite disturbing if it gets out of hand. I sometimes talk to myself while I'm walking down the street, making hand gestures and what not. I'm quite discreet about it, and don't do it often, but then what's the difference between me and one of those crazy guys you see talking to themselves on the street?

I'd try and tone it down a bit and see how you go.

I think that is the key point. You have found a way of altering your state using music and movement. Like STS says people have been doing this for thousands of years. Whether it is an addiction or not is just about definition. There are other swifter ways of achieveing theis altered state. Spending a day a week running between two walls could have course have an impact on your life, your time, your productivity and your carpet.

Recognise what this does for you. Then find out how to change it. If you could click your fingers and achieve the same change psychophysiological change would you prefer that?

Well for me it is an addiction because I can't stop it, can't go on 3 or 4 days without doing it, my body has created this habit..
And it all sounds so silly..
But it's the truth, I can't stop it, even when I don't have time, I have to study or something, my body asks for it.
How can I stop doing something I've been doing for the last 7/6 years?

By getting assitance from somene who knows how to squash habits. At 6 or 7 years this habit is a fledgling.

yo, that is AWESOME.

one question..

do you do any other form of exercise besides this running in your room?

if not, i think this is great.

why do you want to quit doing something that makes you feel good and (from my point of view) relaxes and opens your mind?

when you create a series of movements that you can continuosly roll through without thinking, it totally opens up your mind. music and movement creates a meditative state. meditative states create opening and freeing...why do you want to stop?

i, myself am a breakdancer. and if i don't break or do a little dancing atleast a few hours a day i feel totally crazy. and on the other side, when i do dance regularly, i feel GREAT! i feel relaxed and energized, lucid and free-flowing.

music and dance is very powerful as well as exercise and routine.

it sounds like you just want to stop, because you've realized that it is an uncommon practice. is that the only reason you want to stop?

i mean, just think if you posted "hey, i am addicted to exercising for hours and listening to music. someone help me!"

it sounds a little different, right? but it's really the same thing.

ask yourself: why is this bad?...

what are the advantages and disadvantages of this practice? do the advantages out-weigh the disadvantages?

after you evaluate your situation honestly, i think you'll know what to do...

I'm no physician, but it sounds a "compulsive" and maybe a little obsessive. I have OCD, and one symptom is the development of "routines" that begin to take control of some aspects of a persons life.

It sounds like you've develope a routine that "must" be done before you can allow yourself to go to sleep.

But hell, I would love to be able to motivate myself into exercise.

Good luck.
