medicates, herbs, supplements?  Reply with quote

Is there anything out there to help with the terrible nervousness and what feels like severe anxiety that comes along with public speaking and social situations? I just sit here and think how great life could be if i just felt more comfortable?

Nothing beats learning how to manage your own emotional states. Have you taken a look at the Panic Attacks Course yet? It's free, and it will start you on the path of feeling ever so much better, no matter what you are facing!

Well here's a tip for you, don't buy a herbal supplement called Relora, it doesnt work. I am trying to get hold of some Inderal at the moment, it will help with the physical symptons of public speaking but not the psychological fear, ie it will help shakey voice sweating blushing etc. But I am thinking that what if that is what causes your fear, if that is solved would then your fear not be solved? It's worth looking into Inderal.

Kava Kava is another worth looking into although there have been worries over its safety, I have to say nothing has been proved yet and the case is very poor, personally I think Kava is safe. Kava is a herbal supplement. The Kava should have an overall calming effect though.

If you try either please let me know how you get on.

Since I was 14 years old (now 31) I have had a fear of reading and speaking in front of the class. I can't tell you how much time and energy that has been wasted on this problem. Not to talk about all those awful days where I could have enjoyed life instead. What a waste!!!

I have tried positive visualisation and relaxation and also self hypnosis. Nothing made it go away. It just got worse and worse as I got more and more tired of fighting the f.....g nerves. Twisted Evil

The only thing that was helping was Inderal along with being properly prepared. If only I had learned about Inderal sooner. Inderal is now taken off the market (Norway, don't know about the rest of the world). But there are other betablockers with the same effect. Take them at least 1 hour before youre presentation and you will feel much calmer!!!

Passion flower is a good one, as it helps you to relax. I believe it is like Kava.

Lostbuthappy, you sound like me writing your briefing. Man, talk about hitting it on the head. I have tried everything too, for the most part, and the more I try the worse it gets. It seems to be embedded in my head.

I'll tell you, I am very tired of fighting this myself. All the wasted time preparing and being so darn nervous - man. Everything else in my life is fabulous. I am outgoing, fun, active, educated, etc... however, and this is a big however, the public speaking curse is just something I cannot seem to get around. It is truly incredible.

Thanks,

Taurine is ideal for nerves / anxiety, as is St Johns Wort.

I've used them both to GREAT EFFECT the past couple of weeks.

natural remedies  Reply with quote

Hello, I have social anxieties often. Especially when public speaking in front of groups. Has anyone here experienced this and overcome it without taking herbs or medication, or signing up for classes, etc.? Thanks. Any advise will be helpful. As my hands sweat just typing this.

I'm trying passionflower and st. johns wort to help mood and relaxation. I've also tried serenity with verlerian in it. not bad. But its all in the mind and that what I am fighting against it seems.

Here's an idea for the lot of you: Grow some balls and put things into perspective. If this is what you consider to be a big problem and something to lose sleep over then you are a pitiful excuse for a human being. All emotions are due to chemicals being released in the brain, as soon as you realise your fears are irrational and petty you will be able to overcome them.

Stop being such whiney cry-babies. Drugs to help with public speaking... HA! Thats right up there with "Obesity is a genetic disorder."

from one's perspective  Reply with quote

Well, I've been doing public speaking for awhile now, and I admit I still am nervous everytime I do it. For me, I have a 'natural remedy' to help me overcome the tension and nervousness. The audience, in fact, is the solution to it. I concentrate on people who are listening and seem to be interested in what I'm saying and this motivates me to share what I have in store. Not long I become comfortable with the crowd and I tend to relax.

Plus, to have so many people listening to what you have to say is a privelege, so be yourself and say what you want them to hear! And lastly, enjoy!

Cheers. Wink

I have a simple and uncontrollable fear of other people's judgement, that's why I believe I have such anxiety when speaking in public.

Today, in my sociology class, my teacher called me out in front of everyone after class. She practically announced to me, and the entire class, that I was too quiet, that I need to talk, and that if i didn't she would simply call on me. That made me a little angry and embarrassed, mainly because of the way she announced it so freely to the class.
I am just an introverted person and not particularly interested in sharing my thoughts with my class, even though everyone else in the class has, and the teacher expects it from me.
So, now I must suck it up I guess. I never really talk in class because I am no good and formulating my thoughts to announce to a group of people, as well as the fact that everyone will be judging me, especially since this will be my first time speaking.(The new semester started three weeks ago)
