Citalopram and recreational drugs/alcohol?  Reply with quote

I've recently started taking Citalopram for depression. I'm involved in the free party scene and quite often take drugs like MDMA, Coke, and Ketamine. I've read that SSRI's lower the the effects of recreational drugs but I want to know if anyone has had any experience with SSRI's and drugs. I'm more interestd in finding out if there are any harmful effects. I know you'll just say dont take drugs but I'm not here for advice on that, it's something that goes with the job, so to speak!
Also any advice on alcohol and Citalopram. It doesn't say anything about not drinking in the information with my pills.
All info greatly appreciated. Thankyou.

A friend of mine who has studied chemistry explained to me why you shouldn't mix alcohol with meds. Basically, the reason is that alcohol (which you take in two-digit or three-digit numbers of gramms) binds such that the active component of the meds (which you take in miligramms) is suppressed and does not work anymore.

So if you mix alcohol with meds, you will each time go through a little withdrawal shock, and after that again through a little overdose shock. This will mess with the primary effect of the med (i.e. it will lead to mood swings), and also lead to stronger side effects and some withdrawal effects.

MDMA is somewhat dangerous by itself, but you already knew that I guess. I don't know about the others.

I used to drink on my meds and had no ill effect at all, one thing I did notice I NEVER got a hang over the next day. I'd only drink one night a week though or every other week, at weekends. I wouldn't drink all the time on these, as the above post says it cancelles out the drug.

Also everyone is different. just because I was fine when drinking doesn't mean you will be, so just be careful and see how you go.

Ok, I used to be on meds and also going out and taking all kinds of sh** staying out all night. But at the end of the day you make a choice in life which is your mental health OR a few parties and some serious mental health problems. I mean do you not realise why you are depressed if you are shovelling MDMA and coke into your face each weekend? Sorry, it's just that I've been here and found out how much it hurts.

In terms of your question I think it will take the edge off the comedowns being on Citalopram but you also won't get as high on the MDMA in theory. In terms of harmful effects, I guess it depends on what you mean. The likelihood of having seizures and serontonin syndrome is probably increased significantly but still not that much of a risk really as long as you are careful.

take care.

In a few words mate, its a complete waste of time taking the Citalopram while on the said drugs??? You will get NO response what so ever from the Anti depressant, i'd say in my opinion, its likely to make you psychologically worse, just my opinion though, and from watching friends live a similar life Question
