will taking public speaking class help ?

Postby Dizal » Mon May 16, 2016 8:41 am

Hi everyone

I am wondering if taking a public speaking class will help to improve my communication skills? I have fear of speaking not only in front of a big group but even in a small group. Could be even in a small circle of friends . I recently had to do oral presentation in uni and I was shaking and couldn't speak clearly. I just want to be able to talk without being anxious and scared. I feel like life is passing me by because of not being able to communicate.

Please let me know if anything has worked for you or if you have any advice for me.

Thank you.

Yes, public speaking classes will help. The more you practice, the easier it will become.

Yes, I encourage you to take a public speaking class! What you learn in class will help you begin to practice. Then over time, practicing will reduce your fear and increase your ability. The feedback you get from the class will help you figure out how to do a little better each time.

Yes, taking a public speaking class will give you the opportunity to practise public speaking and help you to break down the various stages of presenting. View it as a long term development and may be after 10 or so presentations, you will become familiar with the process, handling attention and relaxing.

what you asking it is about changing how you feel with the situation and as everyone say FACE THE FEARS

a problem is: if you face a situation with fear and leave again with fear, I don't really see that as something helpful , the idea is to FACE THE FEAR and STAND THERE and WAIT until you change how you feel about the situation

even if it takes for hours you just wait , you just stand there until you finally be like " OK I HAVE NO OTHER OPTION BUT TO RELAX "

but when it comes to something like PUBLIC SPEAKING, a problem is that there is also a bunch of trash involved like the expectations we have from ourselves, the fear of consequences and stuff like that, you have to be like F the consequences, I Do my best, and I have to respect the fact if something goes wrong I will be fine with it , I can handle that

Thanks guys, it's helpful to see your feedbacks.

I will definitely consider taking public speaking class coz it's better to try anything if it means it will change my current situation.

Hi, I would like to share with you my experience of public speaking. After reading it you'll get your answer.
Actually, I am working in UVA Digital company situated in Noida India. I am working on a their main project Mynahcare and it's been just a month I have started with this company. One week ago, the business head wanted all of us new comers to give a presentation on our respective field. Public speaking is just like a monster to me as well. Though, I have thorough knowledge of my field so I knew what I need to present in front of my senior as well as junior members. The BIG DAY came and I came out on third number out of 10 people who were about to give their presentation. When I started my presentation my voice was shaking with my legs and suddenly I fell down my pen because of this shaking thing. I quickly took my pen and apologized for the same. I resumed and something from inside told me "go ahead you can do it..people standing or sitting in front of you are laymen..they do not know anything about you and your field..they all are dumb".. After listening to inner inner instinct and somewhere it boosted from inside...My legs stopped shaking, my voice was Lauder and I was more confident than ever before...

Moral of the story is: Do not lose your confidence any how..Just think people out there are not smarter and intelligent than you. You are equally smart, intelligent and confident enough..

I hope my experience will guide you in a better way.. If you need any help you can also contact me..

Thank you very much for sharing your with me.

You are right other people don't even care but I guess its the presenter that is thinking to much.

I will definitely have to overcome this by some how.

Hi Dizal,

I feel your worries man I am still afraid myself but it gets much better each time. I say yes, taking public speaking class help although before doing so or as an add on, I would recommend you something much cheaper. A book I read a few weeks ago that helped with well. The book is called: " Public Speaking: The 10 Best Solutions To Perform The Speech Of Your Life" by Jack Barrow. The author gives great exercises to practice in order to be more confident and FACE your fears. In fact it's not speaking that you are afraid of, but the idea of failing, choking or looking stupid in front of an audience. The book explains well how to overcome this! Good luck mate! Cheers

A course or even a public speaking group will certainly help with your public speaking skills. It really comes down to seeking advice, gaining feedback on your current skill level and habits, and practicing (a lot).

Hi Dizal
Yes a public speaking course will help. I used to go to public and community meetings and tried different things. For instance, if there was a motion that I could support I would second it by calling out "I second that." Also if I agreed with a speaker, I would stand up and say "I agree with the speaker."
It became easier when I took a public speaking course.
