If I have ever have to write a speech, I would read and watch all the famous speeches made by world leaders. I will make notes of what I liked about those speeches and would try to incorporate that in my speech. Apart from that, I would read some sample persuasive essays to understand how to get your point across to the audience successfully.

For many people, structuring their speech means pulling together the slides and then assembling them like a card. This is the order that speech training courses have been following for years. It also means that no one apart from the speaker knows where the speech is headed.

The heart of a successful speech is a proper format. Which one should you opt for? The speech structure depends on the nature of your talk. Speech training teaches the following options –

• If you are persuading an audience, use the problem-solution structure. Frame the problem at a high level, then go in-depth in it, and then provide solutions in the form of benefits.
• If you are debating about a contentious project, residues method. It is a variant of problem-solution structure.
• When you have a story to recite, use the classic story structure.
• If it is about history and facts, use the chronological structure.
• If there is a product display in place, use the demonstration structure.
