Feel like my boyfriends therapist. Can anyone relate?

Postby walkingonglass » Sun Aug 26, 2018 12:18 pm

Hi.. my partner has GAD. He’s a very vocal person and also very anxious and worried person. The smallest decision needs to be discussed.. and he is always worried about things that can go wrong.

Sometimes I feel like I’m his therapist.. and he’s mentioned that too. He tells me absolutely everything and I’m his safe person.

Is it bad to feel like you’re your partner therapist? Has anyone else who has a partner with GAD found that they feel that way?

Or does anyone work gad/anxiety have any thoughts or experiences?

The reason I ask is that I don’t want it to be detrimental on our relationship...

Thank you x

It is okay to be that listening ear to your boyfriend. He prolly needs it and he is lucky he has you. Remind him that he is strong and brave. And that he is perfectly capable of handling life and anxiety. Encourage and keep the mood positive.

Work with him and walk with him and show him as subtly as possible that he can also be the support that you are to other people when they need it. It is important that you do not cripple him in the process of being there for him. He must not start depending on you too much.

Do it gently. Without anxiety and with reassurance.
