Awesome! Congratulations. When it is published maybe you can post a link. It would be fun to read.

I don't see us figuring out how people can hibernate for months or years, either. If they were vivi ex mortuis they'd someone to turn them, wouldn't they?

There are a wide variety of ideas to overcome the various problems related to interstellar travel. What was sci-fi 100 years ago is reality today.

Actual scientific research, using the most optimistic of guesses, places interstellar travel several decades from now. This optimistic estimate isn’t framed in terms of generations or centuries, but decades.

This is positive in my opinion. Even if the estimate is grossly in error and it takes another 100 or even 1000 years, that is a blink of an eye in evolutionary terms.

The doomsayers of each generation over the last 49,999 years consistently scream and cry and justify their outrageous fear mongering based on the idea humanity will end with the next generation, usually sooner. “The end is nigh” so give me power! Oddly they never talk in terms of a few centuries or a millennia left for humanity to survive, because that doesn’t generate the fear they need to serve their agenda.

I don’t buy all the hype. If we need a few hundred years to develop the technology to get humanity off the planet, no problem.

To me it's unacceptable that one-third of the world's people are starving or can't access clean water while another one-third expect the best of everything.

The question is why is the abundance of resources not distributed or provided? Why is there lack of access to the abundant supply?

Children were dying of starvation in Africa when I was a child and they are still dying today. I see the same commercials redone in digital. I hear the same pleas for help.

If scarcity was an issue it would be reflected in the free markets. Hell, we throw away more food than could be consumed by those starving. We pour more potable water on the ground than those without clean water could possibly drink.

I think the blame should go to their parents. They should not create children if they know they cant afford make good living for them. If we would give them resources for free, then they would create even more children, whole world would be black, or asian. Now western population is going lower as I understand. Just those poor people population is groving. We think before creating children if we will be able to afford to make them at least ok living. And they dont care if they can afford clean water. What a bad people.

But I also live in a country which does not have much resources to sell from earh like oil, etc. So we are kind of slaves to those countries who have. But again - it is also our parents responsibility. At least now we can move relatively easily to another country where there is more money to be made. Also now lot of business can be done remotely, just need a computer, skills and you can earn money from the rich country. So those in africa also somehow need to get a computer, learn to do somthing and they can make shitload of money - because lets say if you earn 2000 usd in USA, its not much per month. But I guess if you do same work and get like 1000 usd but use them in africa, you are probably like king there.

But I heard the problem is their mentality. Western people work harder so they have more money. Many people who hire indians - they work attitude is bad they see, its hard to work with them and thats why probably they live the way they live.

One company also had opened office in affrica. Then they noticed that those africans do not work as much as western people and they closed the office. Thats why africans dont have money - mentality.

Also heard in countries like sweden, england - africans just get money for nothing, they dont work. They better go do crime, sell drugs and complain when people hate them.

Wow Hamming...

Let me reframe what you said.

There are sociocultural differences that result in different world views and this translates into different values, different beliefs, and different behaviors, e.g. size of family or individual responsibility.

***

Do you know why some cultures have a lot of children Hamming? Because they don’t have a national healthcare system or social security or an individual retirement account. When they get older or have health care problems they can’t rely on the government and taxes to take care of them.

Now we can ask the question why those countries have failed to develop, but it isn’t just to blame individual families (parents) for having children in order to ensure later in life they don’t die a miserable, cold death.

I thought you said you are about justice, right?

If you had been born into a society lacking in a national health care system, education, social security, insurance, etc. what would you do? After all you have this idea that your purpose is to be happy. Don’t these people deserve to be happy as well?

You know how they try to achieve happiness Hamming? By having children to provide when they get older. And guess what, that is the way humans have provided for care in their older years for 200,000 years.

200,000 years and now Hamming comes along and says the people already in conditions without all the safety nets provided by Western countries should not have children. So not only do they not get healthcare, education, or retirement, but no children.

That’s not justice Hamming.

To put it a bit more bluntly Hamming, your most recent post was simply an uniformed racist rant. That’s me being kind.

those africans do not work as much as western people

The issue is not as black and white as you think it is, if by "western" you mean white.

Apart from what Richard has said about the great gulf between first world living and third world survival, can you possibly be unaware that people who can't afford homes of any kind, or enough food for themselves and their relatives, can't be expected to access contraception? And that the men among them, with no hope of a better life, will still want the comfort of sex even though the last thing their partners need is yet another pregnancy?

In the UK where I live, the free-for-all National Health Service means having babies is now a career choice for girls still in school, especially in the more crowded council estates, ie. those from poorer families. Their Careers Officers have been telling them what a competitive job market they face, their parents have been on unemployment benefits for decades, while they know from observation that single mothers will always be looked after by the British Government: a rent-free home, parent's allowance, separate payment for each child and of course free healthcare.

For some reason, poorer people living in overcrowded conditions are the ones making the most people, regardless of whether they are "western" or the other kind, or what colour their skin is.
