Dress for Success?

Clothes maketh the Man! Is there any psychology behind this idea? Many companies promote casual attire to make employees comfortable but is this helpful or harmful in the workplace?

There's lot of psychology behind this. Best to present yourself as a professional always at work. Clean/tidy/well groomed. You'll need to decide if a suit is appropriate if no one else wears them etc. In banking everyone has a suit. At Google style firms, not as much everyday , but surely at sales meetings - it's all about context.

I say its helpful. Who honestly works at their best when they feel uncomfortable or like a idiot? Most uniforms or business attire is like, stiff and itchy, you can barley move and half the time they are not geared toward the female body. Lets say you do find something that "feels" ok, but you look in the mirror and you look like a 5 year old in your moms clothes...thats how i feel when I had to wear a suit jacket....it was soo uncomfortable. Then when I worked in HR, you had to be very "buisness like" which I did find a few outfits I was ok in, then it was like hmm too much make up? Not enough? Hair ok? I duno, I think if work places chill out....employees would be happier. Customers do not remember you for wearing jeans instead of business pants, they remember the kind of service you gave them. If your feeling not like yourself, your not going to give your very best after a while. I say jeans, a nice top, closed toed shoes, no excessive piercing or excessive/offensive tattoos showing, and your good. Employers need to embrace that psychology.

(if your going to a interview, dress up if you really really need the job. If your going and you have options and want to make a statement like hey this is me, I want to be comfortable while I work here and I want you to understand that...then dress a little down and see what they say. My last interview I flat out said something like -do you all allow fun hair colors? If I want to put a purple streak for example in my hair is that ok? Because if nots not we might not be the best fit) Guess what-got the job!
