Is marijuana the same thing as cannabis?

Both cannabis and marijuana refer to the plant with over 540 different compounds and few varieties. The most important cannabis substances for medical research and use are THC and CBD. If the cannabis plant has THC in small traces it can be considered an industrial hemp plant, and could be used to get hemp-derive CBD. Unlike THC, this cannabidiol has no intoxicating characteristics.
Marijuana is a widely spread term for a medical or recreational drug with enough TCH to affect a consumer’s mental control. The legal aspect of marijuana use is a matter of each state or country and its laws.

As is the legal aspect of “cannabis” use.

Whether poster Peter Grinspoon personally believes the term marijuana is or is not the same thing as the term cannabis is legally irrelevant. What is relevant is how each state/region/country uses these terms when enforcing laws.
